I was shocked and appalled Sunday morning in cycling class at the gym. The instructor, who is about my age and constantly raves over 1980s music, played ELO, and then she asked the class, “Remember that horrible movie Xanadu?” If my shoes had not been clipped into the pedals, I might have fallen off my stationary bike. (And, the ELO song she was playing was not even from that movie!!!)
Okay, so not an Oscar contender, but… hello: Gene Kelly, hello: Olivia Newton-John, hello: shirtless hero from The Warriors, hello: amazing soundtrack album, hello: rollerskating fantasy romance!
That movie and its soundtrack were so darn popular that we actually performed a rollerskating jazz number to “All Over the World” by ELO at that year’s dance recital. You heard me: rollerskating jazz. And not inline skates either. The mere fact that I ever had equilibrium and stamina to get through a rollerskating jazz number boggles my mind. My girlfriends and I loved it!
I just don’t know what to say; have no idea what would make my instructor make such an uncharacteristic 80s-disparaging comment. We’re talking about a woman who will play Duran Duran and caveat it with, “John Taylor is my husband.” To which I always say, “Hands off Nick Rhodes.”
If you’re not on my side of this argument, that’s okay. I’m going to point you to 2005’s Roll Bounce — a great movie that harkens back to the fantastic roller-mania heyday. Because who doesn’t like rollerskating movies?
