A few weekends ago, I took a box of trade-able books to my favorite used book store, McKay Used Books, and received store credit for my trade, which was immediately applied toward an audio book from their stacks. Prior to exiting the store, I happened to notice a table near the front window that was laden with books that seemed to have been singled out for some special purpose. It was a local author table!
I inquired with the manager on duty, “How does one get on the local author table?” Of course, they asked things like, “What kind of book is it?”, and the described process was fairly specific, but it was also straightforward. First, I had to confirm that I actually am a local author. Next, they told me I would need to sell McKay’s three printed copies of my novel at half of the cover price. Lastly, I was advised to contact them prior to arriving at the store with my books so that an employee familiar with the process would be available to oversee the sale. So that’s what I did.
And now I am in a brick and mortar book store! And they’ve posted me on the Richard McKay Used Books Facebook page and Instagram! Very exciting!
McKay’s is hosting a couple of author signing events in September. While I have not inserted myself into that additional “perk”, it’s clearly a great venue for recognizing local talent. I have been going to this bookstore for many years, and I’m so I didn’t have blinders on so that I would notice that table at the front!
